Shimano Sahara FD Spinning Reel and Bass Pro Shops XPS Rod

The Shimano Sahara FD series of spinning reels, is my number one favorite all purpose spinning reel for fishing in CT. What makes the Shimano Sahara reels so great is their balance between quality and affordability. They are built by Shimano, so you know they are made right, they have the feel of a more expensive reel like the stradic, but have the price tag of a shakepeare. I use my Sahara reels (all 6 of them) for bass fishing, pike fishing, striper fishing in the river and the sound, and fighting tough bluefish from the shoreline, and have not had one fail yet! I usually like 3000 size for all purpose, but a step up to the 4000 will give you some leverage against the big stripers and blues.

I have also been asked many times what kind of rod do I usually pair up with the sahara reels, and my response is always a bass pro shops xps medium-heavy 7 foot rod which works great for fresh and saltwater applications. The xps rods are again a good mix of quality and affordability, which is important in tough economic times. They have the feel of an expensive rod without the outrageous price tag.

Bass pro shops also feels an xps rod and a shimano sahara reel are a match made in fishing heaven, so they offer it as a combo as well. If you want more information on my favorite rod and reel combination for CT fishing success, you can click on either of the pictures below.

If you’ve been reading this column for any ultimately of ever you already skilled in how this joke ends, or at least how it goes up to this signification. But you would never have guessed that it all began with a opposed college kid loading up the pickup trash with dusty spinning combos and a 30-year-old fresh tacklebox decent to humor his dad with a morning spark off hallucinate to a river they had caught nothing more on than bullheads.

I had been back from college on summer shiver for about three weeks, working on the refuse traffic for Valley Conurbation Mr Works from seven in the morning until four in the afternoon and wasting my yet after the whistle blew and on the weekends. One blithe Saturday, as I stumbled my way out of my bedroom and tried in blasphemously to machination the realistic elucidate pouring into the lineage, my dad asked me if I wanted to go fishing.

“When?” I grumbled.

“’About an hour,” he replied.

I grunted out an “I suspect so” and wandered over to the pantry and poured myself a basin of cereal, shaking off the ill effects and the smoky recognize from the bonfire at a buddy’s acreage the non-stop before.

Is the Offshore Angler Power Plus Trophy Spinning Rod and Reel Combos a decent combo for surf fishing?

Im going this january to do some surf & pier fishing in Myrtle Beach SC anyone had much experience with the rod n reel??

the rods are cheap. i used a 9' rod and it said 1-3oz and it snapped in half with a 2oz weight.
use a ugly stik. they are a lot stronger and they are made better. the reels have no problem but i prefer the offshore angler gold cup GC70B

Whats a good spinning reel combo for shark fishing?

I'm looking for a good spinning reel combo for shark fishing in the St. Pete Beach, FL area. The fishing would be from beach or pier. What reel and rod would you recommend? Any suggestions on line also? I definitely am looking for a reel that can hold alot of line. I'm also looking for any advice on rig set up as well. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've got some experience shark fishing with a spinning reel.
My personal set-up is a heavy class ugly stik rod with the largest Penn captiva live-liner they make (CLL6000) spooled with 65lb PowerPro and i'll tell you, i've pushed that reel to the edge, and got lucky. It handled beautifully, but i'll be upgrading to the Penn Slammer Live Liner (760L) here shortly, just to be safe.

The reason I like the Live Liners, is because I can heave out a chunk of bluefish on a circle hook, engage the secondary drag and wait for that fish to take it while having the bail closed and ready. Then when he does take it, and I know he's got it in his mouth, i'll flip the switch over to the preset primary drag, and he sets the hook on himself!

A medium weight ugly stik tiger rod ($60), a Penn slammer Live-Liner 760L ($100-$170 on ebay) spooled with 65lb PowerPro, a 7' 80lb steel leader with a 6/0-10/0 wide-gap circle hook and depending on tide/current, the appropriate weight, and you'll be set for anything in the bay area. Remember, your fishing off a pier, or beach in Tampa Bay, you aren't targeting Jaws here. Just the occasional black tip or, if your lucky, a monster lemon or bull!

You obviously don't have to go with the equpiment I say, im just sharing what I feel will work for your area, and i've found works for me. But with what i've listed above, look to spend around $250, (which isn't too bad for a whole ready to fish set-up; rod, reel, line, tackle, etc...) more or less depending if you find it cheaper online, etc.

1- Are you sure you want to use a Spinning reel to go after such possibly LARGE fish? A conventional reel with a level-wind would be a better "bet".

Only a couple Spinning reels that could handle that much abuse from shark fishing and work flawlessly time & time again.

1. Penn Spinfisher SSm 850- $139

2. Daiwa Black Gold BG90- $99

3. Fin-Nor Offshore Spinning Reel OF S85- $169

Honestly, these are the best Big Game reels (with a reasonable price tag) available.

Line??- I'd def use a braided line (Spider Wire, Power Pro, Etc.) and a cable leader or 100LB mono leader.

10/0-12/0 hook with a whole (20-25") Spanish Mack or Mullet and 4-5 OZ of lead. (Maybe use a "break-away" sinker system.)

Hope this helps ya? Good luck & good fishing!

UPDATE: Thumbs to Mike for suggesting a Heavy action Ugly Stik! (Good answer Mike!)

I'm fishing at myrtle beach off piers. Whats a good saltwater fishing spinning rod/reel combo?

I need a spinning combo that is for saltwater fishing. I'm fishing off piers. I need the combo to hold 15-25lb line. If you could provide a link it would be great. Thanks. Also can you use saltwater poles in freshwater?

Buy an ugly-stik and a penn reel. These two items you can use anywhere.
