How would you switch the drag side on a eagle claw brave eagle fly rod (fec10)?
May 23, 2008 by Hoopie | Posted in Fishing
I have recently bought a eagle claw brave eagle fly rod on ebay. When i opened it up and started to play with it i relieved that the way the drag was set was for a person that real with the right hand (odd). I throw with my right and reel with my left. Is there any way to switch it around. Thanks
-Hoopie
Yes, there is- All reels have a way of switching from right to left hand retrive. Remove the spool and look inside the reel- does it have a simple click and pawl drag? (two triangles that click on a central gear) If thats all it is, then you can simply respool the line the opposite direction. If there is a clutch then it will have to be converted. There should be directions for how to switch it- either without tools or a few simple ones. If you still can't figure it out, check out Eagle claws website and ask for help, or take it to a fly shop they can help you figure it out.
P.S>- I looked at the reel on ebay, looks like its a single action click and pawl, so should be a simple matter of just respooling line the other way.
Good Luck

I'm sorry but respooling in the other direction isn't the answer here(you'd be fighting the drag to reel it in) but when you open it up ..you'll notice that what holds that little triangle thing in..there should be the same thing on the opposite side in the same area (if its at 11 o'clock now..the opposite side should have one at 1 o'clock..just take it off the 11o'clock position and flip it over to the 1 o'clock so that it is the mirror image of it's original position...sounds more complicated than it really is

What is the best value in rod and reel for trout fishing? Opinions on Shakesphere and Eagle Claw brands?

Thank You.
I'm guessing you mean "freshwater" Trout?
Ugly Stiks have their place in the fishing "scene",(in my opinion). But, I think for small to medium sized Trout, I would want to get a better, more sensitive, fishing rod than either a Ugly or a Eagle Claw. (Eagle Claw rods are very "slip-shod" rods, in my opinion. Eagle Claw makes excellent hooks, but rods......)
There are Fenwicks, Shimano, Daiwa ,Okuma, Quantum, Pflueger,St. Croix reels and rods that will out-perform, and "last" longer, than your typical "cheapy" Rod & Reel. And many of these company's "low-end" Rods & Reels won't be MUCH more than what you pay for a Shakes or Eagle Claw,(and you get better quality!).
I guess the Q is , Are you gonna use this combo alot? Do you want to buy a "cheapy" rod/reel combo & buy another one in a couple years? Would you prefer a "mid-priced" combo that will last for years & years? Are children going to be using it,(if so then an Ugly Stik WOULD be the way to go)?
A good idea is to spend about $60-75 an outfit. Most combo's in that "price-range" will last a bit. You CAN spend less but you might be spending that twice or 3 times in a 2 year period; best to go with name-brand, high-quality, outfit's! Who wants to lose the "Trout of the decade" because your drag is "stuck"?!!!!

Best Value is Daiwa... you can pick them up at Walmart as cheap as those two brands and the quality of the reel is much better. If I had to choose though i would probably opt for the shakespeare. The main thing for trout fishing is to get a light to medium action rod with a reel that has a reel good drag. You dont want the drag to be jerky - try to find one that is smooth as you pull on the line that way the trout wont break the light line you have to use for trout fishing.

It just depends on quality, price, stores, etc. Do you want the best or just economy ? We've used Mitchell-Garcia rods and reels for years and years that cost quite a bit. But you can catch fish with low-cost equipment just as well. Knowing your fish and their habits will almost make a stick, string, and bent pin equal a top-end rod and reel as far as catching fish.
Shakespeare is a good brand as far as I know, but I've only used Eagle Claw hooks. They get the job done.

I would go with the ugly stik 4'8" ul or up to the 5'6" lite for your needs of the 2 rods mentioned. There are better rods that would fit your needs but the one I mentioned will do you just fine!
Eagle claw rods are low to low/med class rods and they will work but not to durable!

cast without the line unraveling and making a huge birds nest. maybe i need a thinner line. i spooled it with all i had, (40 test) and i think it may have been too thick. plus it was cold and the line coulda been stiffer. i don'tknow, but i would appriciate some advice from someone who uses an open faced reel. thanks! happy new year!
every answer is a good one...2 much 4 me to call. yea, i figured it was too heavy line, but like i said it was all i had and i didn't feel like buying any more at that time. i will 2day tho and i hope it will help. updates will follow.
If your refferrin' to a Spinning reel, more than likely ya' have too much line on it. After spoolin' line on reel, it should be bout' a 1/8" from outside edge of spool itself. Ya' mentioned 40# test line and goin' to a lighter line, rule of thumb the heavier # test line will have less of a chance "Birds Nestin'", on ya' than a lighter one. The 40 # test your usin', I would think be a bit to heavy, unless it be for Saltwater fishin'. Hope it helps with the mess :)...
Link below, has some pretty good information about fishin' as a whole, soooo ya' may want to keep it for future refference...
