Nov 02, 2008 by rogersjwr | Posted in Boats & Boating
I have a 65lb minn kota trolling motor, the shaft is cracked in the middle. I need to remove the lower unit, I have removed everything from the tolling motor. Including the motor itself. all i have is the casing of the lower unit. I cant seem to find out how to remove the shaft so i can replace it. Please Help
On most trolling motors the tube is threaded into the motor housing
I believe that this is what you are calling the lower unit you will need a vise a pipe wrench and muscle but the shaft just unscrews.
There may be a roll pin going through it, you will need to remove this pin.Apply heat to the housing where the shaft screws in before you try to unscrew it, more than likely there is locktite on the threads.

How to troubleshoot a Minn Kota Power Drive bow mount electric motor?

My Minn Kota Power Drive motor does not work at all. It will not steer, and the main motor (the one that drives the prop) won't turn either. The battery indicator that's built into the unit won't light up at all. The batteries (I've tried 3 different batteries) all test fine with a volt meter, the circuit breaker is in the on position, and all the connections are tight. The unit uses a dedicated 30 amp circuit with a circuit breaker. It has a foot pedal control for steering and speed.
Does anyone have any experience with trouble shooting this motor or any tips?
Check all connections> check the out side of the circuit breaker> Is the a fuse inside the unit??

First turn the unit upside down. If water comes pouring out the motor shaft you have a prop shaft seal gone or the big skinny "O" ring is bad. Take to a marine shop for repair as they had real tight tolerances. And the ball of wires that controlled the speed and forward and reverse had to be reconnected exactly right.

you've tested the battery, but did you measure voltage at the socket where the motor is plugged in?
